ARTistic Pursuits Middle School {book one} Review Art Curriculum

Adding an art study to the normal homeschool schedule is often overlooked because it can be intimidating. When we were presented the opportunity to review the Middle School Book One for grades 6-8 ~ The Elements of Art and Composition by ARTistic Pursuits Inc. we were so excited to add this fully comprehensive art program to our weekly schedule. This Art Curriculum takes away the intimidation.

It is not uncommon to find our children with pads of paper and some sort of drawing utensil in their hands. They love to draw. We are a pretty artistic family. I, myself, love to doodle journal on almost a daily basis but there is more to art than just drawing. I was so excited to see that this art curriculum was not just a book full of ideas to create different craft projects. The lessons are cultural and there’s art history involved. Making the art lesson meaningful and not another busy-work elective.

ARTistic Pursuits – Middle School Book One is a bound book with heavy weight pages for lasting use. There is a supply list provided in the book. The supplies needed are very reasonable and can be purchased at your local craft store or through Amazon. The program consists of 16 Units. Each unit is broken into 4 important lessons. The first lesson is Building A Visual Vocabulary, the second lesson is Art Appreciation and Art History, the third lesson is Techniques, and the fourth lesson is the Application. There is a total of  lessons.

They book suggests you do two lessons per week for about an hour each lesson. There are enough lessons to last for an entire school year – about 36 weeks.

The lessons are so detailed and easy to understand that it is child lead and doesn’t need your instruction, beyond the introduction and maybe the first few lessons. Just to get your child used to the progression of the lessons. Or, if you want to hone in on your art skills, this art program is great to do together. This can be used for one or more children.

Because our 11 year old daughter is quite artistic, my original plan was for her to do this art program on her own. After I saw how thorough and meaningful this was and what she was drawing, I wanted to join her. We will be creating a special mommy and me time while doing these lessons together. We can discuss what we are reading and learning together and share our drawings and art work with each other. This will be our special bonding time.
